The Bathers are a Scottish chamber pop band.
Formed in Glasgow in 1985 after the band Friends Again split up, they are essentially the vehicle for singer-songwriter, Chris Thomson. They have released seven albums.
The Bathers along with the peerless Blue Nile have released some of the most sumptuous music ever recorded by British artists.
There are undoubtedly many Bathers fans who would advocate their 1995 album "Sunpowder" as the zenith of their luxuriant powers but i would like to put the case forward for the album that followed it 1997's Kelvingrove Baby.
It was the first album released on the "Wrasse" label by the band and is infused with a statuesque majesty and grace that speaks of a budget way way beyond what Thompson would have used in reality.
Kelvingrove is an area in Glasgow.
The girl( Credited as Kelvingrove beauty Vivienne) on the CD cover of this album is so gorgeous she could stun a wasp at twenty paces .The whole project is infused with beauty and excellent taste. The Bathers to put it succinctly are a class act all round and Kelvingrove Baby is the classiest thing they have put their name to.

Sometimes I used to fly away each night
On the wings of an old love song
Somehow I used to feel that I was weak
Then I grew strong
I call your name
You call my name
Doubt among us rose
Like provincial song
Will we be strong enough to carry on?
I'll be waiting for you
I'll be waiting 'til you're sure
(Under the circus
Down by the trees
Under the august sun)
If the glory of love will see us thru'
I don't know....maybe
Then you can be my
Kelvingrove baby
If I could reach you
I would walk all night
To hold you
In the racing dawn
Someday I know
That you'll be back
Somehow I can hear
Your laugh in an old love song
I know your name
You know my name
Drawn to the rose
'Thru the crowded thorns
Will we be strong enough to carry on?
I'll be waiting for you
I'll be waiting 'til you're sure
If the glory of love will see us thru'
I don't know....maybe
Then you can be my
Kelvingrove baby
Something about loving
Something about time
And fading footsteps
Down a long distance line
Somehow desires
Forever flickers
In her green and cinnabar flecked eyes
When your girl looks at you
And she sighs
When she moves besides you
You want the moment touched
With magic and immortality
You want rain
You want soft music
And the last words to be about love...
