West Point Organist Craig Williams plays a chorale prelude for the New Year from Johann Sebastian Bach's Orgelbüchlein. Translated "Help me to praise God's goodness," this hymn mentions the turning of the year and how we must remain thankful to God remembering all good things provided during the year. The counterpoint and imitation in this prelude between all voices in the accompaniment, drawing directly from the melody in diminution, are indicative of a more mature and developed composer than some of the other preludes in the Orgelbüchlein. This particular prelude may have been written in Leipzig, years after many of the preludes composed in Weimar. Bach probably returned to this collection several times in attempts to add to it and complete it. Not long after taking his position in Leipzig, he abandoned it completely, only finishing 46 of 164 planned pieces.
