In our region, the climate has been changing even faster in the winter than the rest of the year. This has resulted in a decreasing number of days of snow cover and more soil freeze-thaw cycles during the winter. Potential effects in our forests are numerous, but they include altered nutrient cycling and retention in soils, and decreased dormant periods for trees. These are fundamental changes ecologically and have implications for how animals (and people) interact with this environment. Join us this evening for a lecture by Dr. Colin Fuss, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science at State University of New York Plattsburgh as he details how he and other scientists study winter climate change in forests and what we might expect going forward.
