Dr. Patricia Pellikka, a Professor of Medicine and Consultant in Cardiology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, reviews her article appearing in the April 2021 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where she examined patients using echocardiography during their COVID-19 illness to see if echo findings were related to short-term outcomes including prolonged hospital stays and mortality. A number of the patients in the study had prior echocardiograms which offered opportunities for comparison. Cardiac findings included myocardial infarction, presumed myocarditis, stress cardiomyopathy, elevated right ventricular systolic pressure, and others. Dr. Pellikka notes that caution needs to be taken when interpreting results of echocardiography because many of the patients had pre-existing cardiac conditions prior to contracting COVID-19 that could play a role in the outcomes.
