Holocaust Survivor Helga Waldman (née Bejach) recalls life during Kristallnacht.
HELGA WALDMAN (née Bejach) was born in Berlin, Germany. Raised in non-observant home with two older sisters. Father a doctor. Mother a gentile of German-Prussian descent died in 1931. Attended Kleist Lyceum in Berlin when public schools closed to Jews. Forced by Nazis to sell home in 1936. Moved into apartment owned by grandmother. Sent on Kindertransport with one sister to England, August 1939. Lived with Lord Attenborough and family for duration of war. Completed school in Leicester and Cornwall College of Dance & Drama in London. Father deported to Theresienstadt, then to Auschwitz where he was killed, 1944.
Emigrated with sister to United States, November 1946. Joined uncle and aunt in New York City. Eldest sister survived. Came to United States, 1949. Married in 1954. Two daughters, six grandchildren.
Helga passed away in 2005.
The Florida Holocaust Museum honors the memory of millions of innocent men, women and children who suffered or died in the Holocaust. The Museum is dedicated to teaching the members of all races and cultures the inherent worth and dignity of human life in order to prevent future genocides.
