Booker Prize Goes to Indian Writer
Indian writing in English has come full circle on the 50th year of the country's independence with a debut novelist winning Britain's prestigious Booker prize. Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things was selected to win the 20,000 pound Booker prize from a short list of six novels. The award was announced on Tuesday, 14th
October and the following day a still emotional Roy was swamped with requests for interviews by the media before flying to Frankfurt to attend the International Bookfair. The God of Small Things has been acclaimed for its stark style and
inventive use of language including a patois English spoken by the jet set in the southern state of Kerala, Roy's home province.
