Throughout the Second World War, desertion was a big problem for the German Army as many soldier abandoned their posts as they could see the way the war was going. Hitler ordered his forces to fight until the very end and until death, but hundreds of thousands of soldiers fled the battlefield to try and save their lives especially following the defeat at Stalingrad and D-Day. But inside of a Canadian POW camp, there were some executions of German deserters carried out.
The Canadian prisoners allowed Bruno Dorfer and Rainer Beck to be executed by their fellow prisoners for desertion to try and win over the larger prisoner population. They even gave the executioners their rifles and weapons to carry out the job.
