Every winter hundreds of pilots chart a course to frozen Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in the U.S. state of New Hampshire, located in the Lakes Region of Alton Bay. In winter time, when the lake is more than 1 foot in depth, local residents plow out a 3,000-foot landing strip, one of the most challenging in the U.S. For two months, it becomes the only FAA certified ice runway in the Lower 48 States.
