In this video, Dr. Puru Dhawan provides information on a diet to be taken during kidney failure.
We all know that diet is an essential part of the treatment of kidney failure. And most of the time patients are advised not to eat protein and potassium which further restricts the patient's diet. So we provide a full-day routine for patients to eat.
1. Breakfast
In India, we usually eat parantha, poha, Upma, Dalia, or oats for breakfast. If a patient is non-diabetic then the patient can eat sweet daliya or salted daliya, bread, and biscuits. A patient can poha as much as they want. Along with it, a patient can also eat parantha of onion, reddish, cauliflower, or carrot but they should also make sure that the quantity of oil and ghee should be minimal. As it increases urea level in the body. The patient must also avoid potato parantha and Puri as well as bhatura. We also advise the patient to eat derivatives of wheat and rice. Patients are also advised to avoid tea and instead, they can take green tea. Consumption of tea and coffee not only deteriorates kidney health but also increases the amount of acid In the blood. Which further increases levels of creatinine and urea. The patient must also make sure not to drink green tea before or after food and there should be a gap of at least half an hour between the medicines and the tea.
2. Lunch
We advise if fellow patients to take low potassium vegetables along with Chapati. The patient must also make sure that they should not take curd and if the BP of the patient is high then we advised him to take a pinch of salt in every meal. Apart from that patients can consume any spices but they must make sure to avoid chili and salt in their meal. As patients are advised to avoid chili but they can take green chili without the seeds. The taste of food is very important for the patients as it results in low kidney functioning and low hemoglobin as well as pitting edema. That every kidney failure patient is advised to avoid high potassium rooty as well as leafy vegetables.
Coming to the patients living in the South where are advice to eat rice to the patient with diabetes and advice to remove the starch from the rice and then eat it. The patient of South usually eats Sambar which contains Imli which is sour. The kidney failure patient is advised to avoid all sour eatables. Therefore we advise patients to eat imli, lemon, or curd. As papad, achar and chutney also contain salt in high amounts. Therefore we advise every kidney failure patient to avoid them along with jaggery as it is high in potassium.
3. Dinner
The patient can eat food similar to lunch at dinner. Patients can also eat jaw and its derivatives.
High creatinine is the concern of every kidney failure patient there are two ways by which it can be decreased:
1. By decreasing the formation of Creatinine in the body
2. by increasing kidney function
