Foods to Boost Your Acetylcholine for Super Brain Power.
In this video, I'm going to discuss the foods that contain this important neurotransmitter, how it works in the body, and how you can get more of it in your diet. So, let's get started!
What is acetylcholine?
Acetylcholine (ACh) is a brain chemical and modulator that transmits signals between the nerves. It is made up of acetic acid and choline and is a part of the cholinergic system. It is well-known for enhancing cognitive abilities, particularly memory and attention. It was one of the first neurotransmitters scientists identified. It is found in the central nervous system (brain and spine), and in the peripheral nervous system (outside the brain and spine). Just like other neurotransmitters, it is found in the space between nerve cells. Acetylcholine is formed from acetyl coenzyme A (from glucose) and choline which is found in food items such as eggs, beef liver, and chicken. The more we eat these types of foods, the easier it will be to produce acetylcholine.
What is the primary function of acetylcholine?
Acetylcholine plays a significant role in the transmission of signals between cells, including neurons, muscle cells, and gland cells. It is also responsible for regulating the release of other neurotransmitters like dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. The collection of nerve cells that are reliant on acetylcholine is referred to as the cholinergic system.
Health Benefits Of acetylcholine:
1: Studies show that acetylcholine is beneficial for alertness, concentration, and inducing changes in the brain that help with learning and memorization.
2: New research also suggests that cholinergic signaling can improve memory, as well as reduce inflammation that affects the brain's ability to form and retain memories.
3: Acetylcholine acts as a chemical messenger released by motor neurons in the nervous system to prompt muscle contractions. At the neuromuscular junction, it enables skeletal muscles to contract, which is crucial for many bodily processes such as locomotion and coordination. In addition, it helps to induce smooth muscle contractions, allowing for the expansion of blood vessels, increased secretion of bodily fluids, and a slower heart rate.
4: This hormone plays a role in regulating arousal and sleep. It contributes to the maintenance of REM sleep patterns, which are essential for restoration, learning, recollection, and memory formation. As it has an effect on our sleep cycles, it is also essential in enabling us to feel alert when we wake up.
