Thai authorities have confiscated more than 760 kilograms of smuggled ivory. Officials say they uncovered a haul of around 300 elephant trunk pieces with a value of around 1 million dollars.
They seized the contraband on the island of Samui, a popular tourist destination in the south of the country, on December 10th. The trunks were packed in a box that came from Nigeria and travelled through Singapore.
Most illegal ivory is destined for Asia, especially China.
There were concerns Thailand could face international sanctions if it failed to rein in ivory trafficking.
The government introduced a law this year requiring Thais to register all ivory items, and limiting the number they can own.
