U.S. State Department spokesperson Ned Price called on Syria’s Bashar al-Assad regime to allow humanitarian access as the country reels from the devastating earthquake earlier this week that has so far killed more than 19,800 people in Turkey and Syria.
Price said Thursday that U.S. sanctions on Syria’s Bashar al-Assad regime “do not target humanitarian aid.” He said existing sanctions prior to this week’s earthquake include carve-outs for aid and that U.S. aid would not go to the Syrian regime but to reputable partners.
Price also called out Russia for using its veto to limit UN cross-border aid to Syria.
