Warsaw is the sprawling capital of Poland. Its hugely varied architecture reflects its long and turbulent past, from Gothic churches and neoclassical palaces to Soviet-era apartment blocks and modern skyscrapers. The old town has been restored after being massively destroyed in World War II. Its center is the Place du Marché, with its pastel buildings and café terraces. The monument of the Mermaid which sits in its heart is the symbol of the city.
