In 1259, Mongke Khan's death led to a power struggle between his brother, Kublai, and younger brother Ariq Böke. The conflict splintered alliances and led to battles. Though Kublai emerged as Great Khan, the Mongol Empire fragmented. After Kublai's death, Mongol unity further deteriorated. By the 14th century, the Mongol Empire declined significantly. Internal conflicts, the Black Death, and economic troubles destabilized the khanates. Various successor states emerged from the once-unified empire, enduring for centuries after.
