We are covering a rally outside the Aurora Police Dept HQ.
On August 24, 2019, 23-year-old Elijah McClain was stopped by police after someone had called 9-1-1 due to the "suspicious" nature of an anemic young Black man wearing a ski mask while walking home. After police provoked an altercation, a medic with the Aurora Fire Dept injected Elijah with enough ketamine to sedate a man twice his body weight. He suffered medical distress, and died after three days of medical intervention.
Community members are demanding the firing of Lt. Peter Chichuniec, Officers Nathan Woodyard, Jason Rosenblatt, and Randy Roedema, along with medic Jeremy Cooper of the Fire Dept.
Two other demands:
- filing of criminal charges against the 5 involved in Elijah's death
- providing immediate restitution for the McClain family
