The Eiffel Tower started construction in 1887 and was completed 2 year later for the 1889 worlds fair. Initially before construction began many artists and people in Paris complained and sign petitions trying to stop the construction of the tower. Their fear was that the Tower would become a giant eye sore, seeming like a giant dark smokestack rising up in the city, and most also feared the tower could topple over onto their homes. The Eiffel Tower obviously was built and is now a cultural icon. It was initially supposed to remain up for only 20 years... but it's obviously still there.
