A Sarang Festival has not been in the public memory of Kolkata...and on this day, a packed audience feasted on some rare and not-so-rare Sarangs. The buzz, before and after, was unprecedented. The line-up included Smt. Anupama Bhagwat (Sitar), Pandit Tushar Dutta (Vocal), Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya (Sarod) and Pandit Dinkar Panshikar (Vocal) - who delivered the parting shot with aplomb, at the young age of 84+ !!
The Sanskrit word Sarang means a spotted deer or peacock. It is interesting to note that both had been prevalent in Vrindavan, which has its fame sealed in the Raga Vrindavani Sarang, the original Sarang, said to be the creation of Sant Haridas. The variant, Miyan Ki Sarang is said to be the creation of Tansen, the disciple of Sant Haridas. The Sarang family of ragas have a distinct noontime ethos - a serene and often sombre mood - of sparse, sleepy land under a scorching sun.
This notion of Raga Time is, of course, applicable only in Hindustani Classical, and not in Carnatic music.

Paramparik, for 17 years, has remained a unique organization with a unique vision, in the city of joy, a well known name in the Indian Classical music circles - for no-frills music that has mijaz, ragdari, and melody. Founded in 2001 by the Kotali Gharana exponent Ruchira Panda, it started with the famed annual classical conference and then in 2003 the rural education and medical units became functional. Today Paramparik is very well known in the remote villages of Bengal - due to a very successful Grad/Post-Grad Education Program for financially poor students. At the same time, almost all the greats of Hindustani Classical Music have performed on the Paramparik stage.
