St John’s is on the eastern edge of the Avalon peninsula and is the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador province. With a population of a quarter of a million the city’s metropolitan area is the 20th largest in Canada. The city name first appeared on a Portuguese map in the early 1500's making it one of the oldest settlements in North America.
St John’s is built on a natural harbor. Signal Hill rises above the Narrows, which offers the only access from the North Atlantic into the city's harbor. Cabet Tower was built on top of Signal Hill in 1897 to commemorate both Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee and the 400th anniversary of John Cabot’s landfall.
Within the city is an old fishing village know as Quidi Vidi that sits on a lake with the same name. The harbor is known is The Gut and offers access to the North Atlantic.
Cape Spears Lighthouse is south and a little east of St John’s. The location of this historic structure is the eastern most point in North America, excluding Greenland.
Traveling north from St John’s along the Atlantic coast, is Logy Bay. Torbey Bight comes next and is adjacent to the town of Torbey. That is followed by Flat Rock Cove. St Francis Lighthouse is at the northern tip of the eastern arm of the Avalon Peninsula near Pouch Cove.
