The putrid scent is a drop from corrupt mimics in Terraria 1.3 and to spawn corrupt mimics you simply put a key of night into an empty chest. You can craft a key of night at a crafting station with 15 souls of night. Make sure your world has corruption else you will get a crimson mimic!
