The General Staff Building of the Hermitage
The General Staff Building, located on Palace Square, is one of the most monumental buildings in St. Petersburg. Together with the Winter Palace and the Alexander Column, it forms a majestic ensemble of the main square of the Northern capital.
The General Staff Building of the Hermitage is located on Palace Square (building 6/8). The nearest subway stations are "Admiralteyskaya", "Nevsky Prospekt".
The eastern wing of The General Staff Building became part of the Hermitage in 1988. In 2008, a large-scale reconstruction of the complex began in order to adapt it to museum needs. The renovated building was opened in 2014, the year of the 250th anniversary of the Hermitage.
The General Staff Museum is located on 4 floors. On the 1st floor there are office premises and a lecture hall. Exhibition halls occupy the remaining three floors.
The collection of world-famous impressionists and post-impressionists is the main magnet of the new building of the Hermitage. Their canvases are exhibited on the 4th floor in the "Gallery in memory of Sergei Shchukin and the Morozov brothers".
Visitors can enjoy the works of Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Paul Cezan, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and other recognized masters. A separate room is occupied by the work of Auguste Rodin. Part of the exposition is reserved for paintings by artists of the early 20th century - among them Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Wassily Kandinsky.
The exposition is composed in a curious way. It is based on the fresh and light-filled landscapes of France. Variety is brought about by portraits of Parisians with facial features that captivate the viewer. Aesthetic delight is complemented by the majestic views of Gauguin's Polynesia, which do not leave any of the spectators indifferent.
It should be noted that 39 halls are dedicated to French art in the Hermitage! In the General Staff building you can see the creations of French masters from the 15th century.
You can visit the General Staff Building of the Hermitage, unlike the numerous "summer" palaces and parks of St. Petersburg, at any time of the year. The State Hermitage Museum is rightfully considered one of the best museums in Europe, and the renovated General Staff building provides an opportunity to visit a truly modern creative space that combines masterpieces of world art with modern cultural innovations.
