More plugs! Now, I know I usually talk about single-phase plugs &
sockets most of the time, but today.... Three phase! 415 volts!
Earlier, when I shot these accessories in 640 x 480, they weren't
wired. Now they are. A bit later, we will see what these are now
connected to. Of course, for the more established subscriber on
Wayne's Electrical (and my previous channel) you already know.
Now known as BS EN 60309-2, the British Standard for these
was BS 4343. Known in other countries as IEC 309 or CEE 17.
It's probably from that other standard that some people refer to
these plugs and sockets as 'ceeform' plugs! Plug facts. :D
Now, having five pins, this means that a neutral is present, along
with the ever-required earth connection and.... three phases.
Did you know????
Because of this pin-arrangement, if this plug is connected into an
appropriately wired socket, that it is possible to access TWO
different voltages? That's a subject for another video! :D

Now, the colour of these isn't RED for no reason: It's coloured like
that to identify a voltage band: 346v / 220v or 415v / 240v.
346v -to- 415v is the phase-to-phase voltage band, and.....
200v -to- 240v is the phase-to-neutral voltage band.
Other colours for other bands are also used, including Blue for
240v and yellow for 110v. There are other colours, but the most
common ones you're likely to come across are the red, blue and
yellow voltage-banded plugs.
Just for reference: These 5-pin 415v / 240v plugs and sockets
utilise the '6-hour' position. This is known as the 'Earth-Hour'
position, as this is the position which the earth contact IN THE
SOCKET is placed. As always, when referencing the earth hour
position, it is the socket you look at to find the correct position,
NOT the plug. Ideally, the correct earth hour position should be
marked on both the plug and socket. In cases where this is on a
sticky label which has peeled off, this is how to identify the Earth
Hour position correctly.
