This post is an example of how a shot will progress over time, both within and between departments (there are more steps than this, but these are the main ones)
STORY: It was hilariously boarded by @fawnv and introduced Heihei to the movie with his coconut on his head.
LAYOUT: After that, it went to @merrickrustia in Layout where he assembled the CG assets and took a pass with basic camera and character animation. Believe it or not, we had NOT made any village chickens for the film (long story), so all Layout could do was to duplicate copies of Heihei. They made him larger, with the idea we would render them with a more brown color.
ANIMATION: So when it got to me in Animation, I re-positioned the camera to compose the shot lower and closer to try and frame the action a little more, since the shot was already very busy. I did a sphere pass to get the basic musical timing and placement. When I started blocking, I thought it would be wise to differentiate the regular chickens from Heihei even more. Luckily I had a model of Heihei saved locally, which was the old angry Heihei (with smaller eyes and more chicken-like proportions). So I used it to make a blendshape and applied it to the other Heihei's and voila! A background chicken was born. I showed to the directors, and they thought it would be funnier if Heihei wasnt even smart enough to step on the taroroot and just fall over it instead. For the background villagers, I thought it would be fun to make them doing something more than just sorting taro. So I looked up on youtube how to traditionally make Poi. I found a clip demonstrating that they used a wooden bowl and stone pestle, so I quickly modified the existing props to look like those, and animated the villager on the left making Poi! Fun fact.
TECHANIM: When @jorgecereijo did the TechAnim (cloth, hair, feathers, necklace) he was able to bring in my modified chickens and do a bit of cleanup to make everything shine. He did most of the TechAnim on all my Heihei shots on the film and did an excellent job!
LIGHTING: After that it went to @fxwhiz33 in Lighting where I'm convinced they waved a magic wand on everything and the shot is complete!
