Tick bites are common. There is great concern for Lyme Disease from tick bites, especially in certain parts of the US. This tick is Ixodes pacificus, the species of tick that carries Lyme Disease.
Antibiotic treatment based on tick bite alone is inappropriate.
It usually takes 2-3 days of a tick feeding to be able to contract Lyme Disease from an infected tick. Initial symptoms usually include flu-like symptoms and can be accompanied by an enlarging red ring rash on the skin called erythema migrans chronicum.
Joint aches also often occur early in the illness when treatment is much more successful. Later symptoms can include neurological or cardiac effects 3 weeks or later after infection. The disease is harder to treat in the later stages.
