Dolly Parton is an American icon. She has a net worth of $400 million and has had a long and successful career in the entertainment industry. But her life hasn’t always been glitz and glamour. Dolly was born on January 19, 1946, in Locust Ridge Tennessee. She is the 4th of 12 children, her father worked as a tobacco farmer and her mother was a stay-at-home mom. Dolly and her family were poor. Dolly’s family lived in a two-room house. She had to share a bed with her siblings every night. When Dolly was 9 years old, devastation hit her family when Dolly’s newborn baby brother died. Dolly says she was heartbroken by the passing of her brother. A year later Dolly started singing and playing the guitar on radio and Tennessee television shows. Music played an important role in Dolly’s early life. She was brought up in a congregation her grandfather, pastored. Her earliest public performances were in the church, beginning at age six. At 13, she was recording on a small Louisiana label, Goldband Records, and appeared at the Grand Ole Opry, where she first met Johnny Cash, who encouraged her to follow her heart, regarding her career.
In 1967 when Dolly was 21 years old, musician and country music entertainer Porter Wagoner invited Parton to join his organization, offering her a regular spot on his weekly syndicated television program The Porter Wagoner Show. They sung and harmonized together wonderfully, and Dolly gained many fans during her time on the show. Eventually Dolly decided it was time for her to go solo. Porter was not pleased by the news of Dolly leaving, there was friction between the two but as time passed, they became good friends again. Dolly moved to Nashville and was focusing on her music. She had no desire of finding love but one day she met a man named Carl Dean. Carl was so understanding and supportive of Dolly’s career. She ended up marrying him two years after they met, and they’re still happily married today. When it came to her career, Dolly started to skyrocket after she departed from the Porter Wagoner show. 25 of Dolly’s songs made the number one spot on the Billboard country music charts. Dolly has 25 gold, platinum and multi-platinum records. She’s also received nine Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards and two Academy Award nominations. Besides being a singer and actress Dolly is also and entrepreneur. In 1986 she opened her own theme park called Dollywood in Pigeon Forge Tennessee. The park has been deemed to be one of the best theme parks in the U.S. In 1995 she founded a charity called Imagination Library. The organization sends books to the homes of preschool kids. Its goal is to encourage a love for reading in children. Dolly wanted to start the organization in honor of her father who never learned how to read or write.
