This talk discusses the challenges and barriers faced by the Deaf community in South Africa due to the lack of acceptance and understanding of their needs. Jessica Combrink, who is a member of the Deaf community, talks about how the problem starts with parents and family members not accepting their child's deafness and assuming that they can be "fixed." This leads to a lack of access to sign language and education that is tailored to their needs. The talk highlights the importance of sign language and how it should be made available to Deaf children as early as possible, just like verbal languages. awed This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
