Balance and flexibility are essential as we age. Good balance will help you to maintain your independence and prevent falls while flexibility helps you to move more freely and enhance your mobility. The traditional Downward Dog is a great move that stretches your legs from the hamstrings down to your ankles that can also help to improve your posture and stimulate blood flow throughout your body. The Three-Legged Downward Dog or Down Dog Leg Lift challenges your balance and strengthens your core as you complete the move.
To get into a downward dog position, you should start in a tabletop position with your hands directly under your shoulders and knees under hips. From there, tuck your toes and press your hips upwards. Once steady, raise your left leg upwards as high as is comfortable while maintaining your balance in the position. Your raised leg should be straight with your foot flexed. Hold in this position for several seconds then return to the Downward Dog position. Repeat on the right leg.
