The Julian Alps Transboundary Biosphere Reserve was declared on 5 July 2024 at the 36th meeting of the International Coordinating Council of UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme in Agadir, Morocco.
This brings together two existing Biosphere Areas - the Julian Alps Biosphere Reserve on the Slovenian side (managed by the Triglav National Park) and the Julian Alps Biosphere Reserve in Italy (managed by the Prealpi Giulie Nature Park, Italy). This will further strengthen the long-standing cooperation between the two parks, managers of the two existing Biosphere Reserves, which transcends national boundaries and transcends national borders.
The designation of a transboundary biosphere reserve transcending national administrative boundaries allows for the merger of the two existing biosphere reserves, which together cover 267,007 ha.
The Transboundary Biosphere Reserve of the Julian Alps is home to 109,060 inhabitants in 20 municipalities. The Julian Alps Transboundary Biosphere Reserve is renowned for its incredible diversity of living and non-living nature, including mighty mountains, vast karst plateaus, waterfalls and pristine lakes. What gives the area its special significance are the people who live here.
