The Imperial Guard was a highly respected and elite unit of soldiers within Napoleon's Grand Army. At the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, the Guard played a crucial role in trying to turn the tide of the battle in favor of the French army.

As the battle began to turn against the French, the Old Guard was ordered to make a final, desperate charge against the British lines. Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, the Old Guard fought with incredible bravery and determination.

However, the tide of the battle ultimately turned against the French, and as their army began to retreat, some the Middle Guard found themselves surrounded by enemy forces. Rather than surrendering, the Middle Guard chose to fight to the death, with many of them refusing to lay down their arms even after their officers had been killed or captured.

The Old Guard (and some of the Young Guard) battalions held their formation and secured the retreat of the remainder of the French Army before being almost annihilated by British and Prussian artillery fire and cavalry charges.

In the end, the majority of the Imperial Guard was either killed or captured by the British and their allies. The refusal of the Imperial Guard to surrender, even in the face of overwhelming odds, has become legendary in military history and has cemented their place as one of the most respected and revered units in the history of warfare.
