Dr. Martin presents an overview of the current Adult Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) population with Heart Failure.
Facts:
- CHD occurs in 1% of births
- CHD population is growing by over 50,000 patients per year
- Before the era of congenital heart surgery, less than 30% of children born with CHD survived to adulthood
- Currently, more than 90% of patients with CHD survive to adulthood
- By 2005, the adult CHD community outnumbered the pediatric CHD population
- Adults now make up 2/3 of the CHD population in industrialized countries
- In the US the ACHD population has increased to 2.2 million in the past decade
- Average age of ACHD in 2007 was 57
