Over the past 7 months, I conducted a creative research experiment that explores the possibilities of emerging AI technology, and various tools and software to generate unique images.
I trained my custom model, "alterx10," on 150+ images that were generated and created using other custom-trained deform diffusion and image to image Midjourney v4. I used Dalle,2 for early prototyping in beta, everything was further edited in Photoshop to create the perfect training set for my intent.
Through my experiment, I pushed the limits of what I can create with AI technology.
My personal thoughts on the technology. Would love to hear yours in the comments.
With automation and AI technology, we have the chance to do something truly miraculous or evil. Our economic incentives don’t work with well with such powerful tools
Capitalism and extracting value from labor is the root problem here, occurring in the form of "copyright" gray area. The truth is that once an invention scientific discovery or work of art is created, it should belong to all people equally in a society. It is only because one must economically provide value through their art or research to survive that this isn’t possible without loosing their own direct ability to continue doing what they love and give value with.
Having creative materials digested into datasets and sold back to the masses in apps to create new value while new features are launched and gate kept from the majority. Power and knowledge continue to consolidate.
AI is quite literally a communist artifact that uses all data available to it.
does this mean we should be mad at the tools? Seems to me we should be angry at the economic values our society allows.
I hope to see others take the steps to become acquainted with this emerging field so that we can decide as an informed society what is best and how to make sure exploitation doesn’t occur and tools aren’t destroyed or inhibited from creating new systems.
I want to give thanks to the open-source community and the internet for creating spaces that host images and videos so that datasets can exist. Thank you to Katherine Crowson, Emad Mostaque, Stability.ai, Shivram Diffusers Dreambooth, and Deform diffusion for their contributions to this project.
