1978 Triumph TR7 V8 Tarmac Rally Car
Manufactured between 1874 to 1981 by British Leyland the Triumph TR7 was originally advertised as “the shape of things to come”. The TR7 was a radical departure from the TR6, the wedge shape, pop up headlights and revised interior trim.
British Leyland ran a Works team of TR7s in International rallying from 1976 to 1980. Initially these cars were built with the 2-litre, inline 4, 16-valve Dolomite Sprint engine but were soon changed to the Rover V8 engine prior to the introduction of the TR8 model. These cars were known as the Triumph ‘TR7 V8’ and proved successful in rallying events, winning Ypres and on the Manx rallies with charismatic driver Tony Pond.
This car is finished in Leyland works colours was subject to a ground up restoration, which was completed in 2016. It includes a bare metal rotisserie respray.
In keeping with the specification of the works car, is fitted with a tuned Rover V8 with new fully programmable Halteck with wide band adjustment. New race cam and lifters, new extractors and big bore exhaust. TR8 cross member. All new GAZ fully adjustable race suspension with competition uprated springs all round. New large brakes with 4 spot Willwood front calipers and vented discs. New anti dive spacers, new large alloy radiator with twin electric fans. 5 speed Triumph/Rover gearbox. New heavy duty clutch and new Gripper Diff (LSD), new crown wheel and pinion, 3.4 ratio. New driver and co-driver race seats and harnesses, new battery and push button start and new gauges.
Accompanying the sale is an additional set of Super Light wheels. Additionally, the car is fitted with a new Terratrip 303 plus rally navigation computer. Most receipts from Triumph/Rover Spares Adelaide SA, for all new parts. Photos of build are available.
This TR7 ‘V8’ tribute car has recently been on Qld club registration and would make a great track, rally, or very exciting road car.
