I found out Pestilence through tape trading back in 1989, bit afterwards of getting the magical Death's "leprosy" ... I guess just enough later that the impact of Pestilence wasn't as massive on me as Death's release was. But it was still big impact, most definitely. Pestilence's "consuming impulse" struck a nerve instantly, as it sounded both different musically speaking and those vocals by Martin VD ... wow! I guess I became fan of Martin's vocals the moment I heard this Pestilence album. Be it Asphyx, Comecon ... I really enjoy his vocals, and the fact that Asphyx is still going strong, perhaps stronger than ever - it's just great, so great.
Pestilence's "consuming impulse", I taped it from a friend and I sure listened that tape a lot in 1989/90. Martin's forementioned vocals were one thing, but the music itself was amazing, too - it has certain kind of menacing mood, great balance of fast and slower stuff, and I think Pestilence's guitar playing could be the first band that started to impact me with things like dissonant notes, pinch / artificial harmonics etc. Death had that too early on, but it was different with Pestilence, it really raised the overall impact of music on this "consuming impulse" album. I would still go on saying it's the best album by Pestilence, musically speaking especially. I like Pestilence's newer albums too, especially the few later ones where they have gone somewhat more to their roots, it works for me anyway ... but even "testimony of the ancients", as great release as it is, it can't top "consuming impulse" for me.
Anyway, it's a band that has impacted a lot, for sure. Pioneering european death metal band for sure, one of the very first ones and this second album of theirs, consuming impulse, have influenced lots of bands, I'm sure.
Enjoy!
