La Pyramide was constructed by local and/or West African laborers to plans from Italian architect Rinaldo Olivieri in Abidjan between 1969-73.
One of the first skyscrapers ever built in Ivory Coast’s commercial capital, it was supposed to herald a new era as part of the Ivorian “economic miracle” of the 1970s.
La Pyramide was designed as a large covered market that drew inspiration from local traditional markets. It also had studios, offices, restaurants, a supermarket, nightclub, and 180-space carpark.
It was abandoned during an economic downturn in the 1980s and has deteriorated since. Locals took shelter in the building from fighting during the civil wars. Otherwise it’s been mostly quiet.
