Our New York City Psychiatrist: Robert D. McMullen, MD Wil answer in this video about:
1. How To Talk To a Psychiatrist?
2. What To Expect For Your First Visit With Your Psychiatrist
Patients often feel nervous about their first visit with a mental health provider because they don’t know what to expect. We’ve all seen depictions of patients visiting with mental health professionals in movies and TV shows and having anxiety about a doctor’s visit like this is certainly warranted. In this video, Robert D McMullen, MD, of New York City reviews what to expect from the visit and what you should think about saying to your doctor. Dr. McMullen has practiced psychopharmacology for 35 years. He studied at Georgetown University and completed his residency at Colombia Presbyterian.
Dr. McMullen recounts a visit from a patient who had seen much success in his life, yet lost sleep over the idea that he is going to have an interview with a psychiatrist. He was sure he would have to talk about his mother and didn’t know what to say about her or their relationship. At the end of the interview, the patient confessed his concerns to Dr. McMullen. He said he was shocked that he wasn’t asked about his mother at all.
To this, Dr. McMullen says, many times our parents aren’t the reason we have a mental disorder. Sometimes it is the reason, but there isn’t much that can be done about that. Just talk to a psychiatrist like you would talk to anyone else, just be sure to alert them to your symptoms.
If you suffer from depressed mood, excessive worrying, or constantly needing attention be sure to tell your doctor during your visit. If they don’t happen to ask you those questions, you could end up in treatment for a long time before the doctor can accurately detect your symptoms. If you suffer from panic attacks or social phobia, these are also things that your doctor needs to know about you.
The bottom line is, don’t worry about that first appointment. Often the first appointment isn’t going to reveal a definitive diagnosis. Even an internist has you go for more tests or scans before a diagnosis is made.
