The two American political parties generally embrace or acquiesce in the underpinnings of our constitutional collapse: the evisceration of separation of powers in favor of an unchecked, limitless executive. That finds expression in the executive’s usurpation of the congressional war power and power of the purse; congressional delegation of most important legislative power to executive agencies; the absence of congressional oversight to arrest executive lawlessness and secret government; the Newt Gingrich inspired lobotomization of Congress by underpaid, unschooled youngsters predominant among legislative staff; executive warrantless surveillance or tracking of the entire population; misuse of government for private enrichment, i.e., crony capitalism epitomized by the multi-trillion-dollar military-industrial complex; and, a mammoth executive branch featuring multi-trillion dollar annual budgets and deficits and millions of federal employees and federal contractors.
In “Breaking the Two-Party Doom Loop: The Case for Multiparty Democracy in America”, Lee Drutman, a senior fellow in the Political Reform program at New America, explains the multiple ways in which the electoral system is rigged by the Democratic or Republican parties to handicap any rivals, from ballot access, to gerrymandering, to winner-take-all to the financing of political campaigns or otherwise to make restoration of the Constitution impossible.
