STORYLINE:
Pharrell Williams’ fall-winter 2024 show, his third outing as Louis Vuitton menswear Creative Director, took place Tuesday evening in a temporary structure next to the Fondation Vuitton in Paris.
This time, Williams took the audience on a trip to the American West. Along for the ride were actors Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan, musician Marcus Mumford (Mulligan’s husband), South Korean boy band Riize, skateboarder Tyshawn Jones, and model Karlie Kloss.
A western landscape of cliffs and canyons was projected on the walls, with the weather morphing slowly from sunbaked to snow-covered. The models emerged from a silver American-style house, to the sound of drums played by live by the Native Voices of Resistance.
For this collection, Williams played with western iconography, creating modern, luxurious versions of cowboy workwear as well as “prairie dandy” wear. Looks ranged from embroidered denim jackets to blanket coats with intricate patterns, chaps with LV logos and fringe, Buffalo plaids, variations on the bolo tie, tailoring studded with turquoise beading, eye-popping fur coats, and ten-gallon hats.
Footwear included metal-tipped cowboy boots, as well as a brand new collaboration with the bootmaker Timberland.
Artists of the Dakota and Lakota nations worked on the show’s staging and soundtrack, and also contributed to accessories such as a Speedy bag embroidered with the Dakota Flower. Numerous bags included a model in saddle-inspired carved leather and another in “Cowmooflage” canvas, while four giant trunks were wheeled out on carts.
After the show, the crowd stuck around for a live concert by Mumford and Sons, including the debut performance of “Good People,” a song co-written with Williams, and with rhythmic drumming by the Native Voices of Resistance.
