With DID it can be extremely hard to help alters understand and relate to each other or for anyone in the system to become 'home therapist' to the team. One of my team, Polly, uses representational objects to understand complex ideas and experiences and wanted to represent each of the team in relation to her. She chose an object for each member including herself. To my surprise each alter, no matter how aversive to the idea of being represented by toys then negotiated how they wanted to be represented, which representative they could or couldn't stand their own representative being near in the box. Through this system of representing them, I progressively found they were triggered simply by me picking up the representative they felt was progressively 'theirs'. This meant finally that instead of switching all day, I could avert extreme switching by spending time with their representatives at the end of the day and those alters with urgent stuff would present, co-consciously allowing me to hear them out, experience their flashbacks and musings, assure, counsel and have a laugh with them and use the strengths and weaknesses of other team members to give them support or gently, co-operatively challenge their anxieties. So whilst it may look like a basket full of soft toys, these 'toys' have become attachment objects for the different alters in the team.
