What Was The Soviet Union's Secret Plan To Destroy NATO In 7 Days?
Throughout the Cold War, World War Three was a very real possibility. Fortunately, this was avoided but declassified documents from 1979 envisage how the Soviets believed WW3 could have played out. In the event that NATO unleashed a nuclear attack on Poland or Czechoslovakia, the Soviets would respond with nuclear attacks on West Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and Italy. In all the Soviet Union planned on utilising atomic bombs equivilent to 7.5 million tones of TNT. Simultaneously, Soviet troops would push into East Germany, aiming to reach the river Rhine by day 7. Interestingly, France and the UK were spared in these plans, although some very optimistic Soviet military planners believed they should bomb Lyon and push all the way to the Pyraneeze by day 9.
