In response to a reporter's question related to the Trump impeachment inquiry, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the U.S. “had a very clear policy with respect to Ukraine, and we executed it successfully.” Pompeo said the State Department has been working to reduce corruption in Ukraine for more than a year and a half and “every action that I took and have taken will continue to be driven toward that objective.” State Department emails released earlier in November showed Pompeo spoke to President Donald Trump's personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, as Giuliani was seeking to oust U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch. In a wide-ranging news conference on Nov. 26, Pompeo also addressed issues relating to Hong Kong, Afghanistan, Iran and Cuba.
