Injury from falls is a major problem for the elderly population aged 65 and above. The positive news is that you can do something to safeguard yourself or your love ones from falls.
TIPS on preventing Falls
1 STAY ACTIVE
Your chances of maintaining flexible joints and strong muscles increase the more active you are. Exercise to preserve or enhance your balance, strength, and flexibility to prevent falls and injuries from falling. Tai chi and other home or group fitness programs are excellent examples. Or you could join your neighbourhood gym, some of which offer programs designed especially for seniors, or a walking group.
2 Keep Your Bones Strong
If bones are weak, they are more likely to break. This condition is called osteoporosis. You can keep your bones healthy by eating enough calcium-rich foods every day. Some of these foods are low-fat milk, sardines, and cheese. Getting enough vitamin D from the sun is also good for healthy bones. Vitamin D makes it easier for our bodies to take calcium from our food. Eggs, cod liver oil, and fatty fish like tuna, salmon, and sardines are all rich sources. A great way to get enough vitamin D is to go outside when the sun is up and walk around. We only need 15 to 30 minutes of sun exposure every day. But don't go outside during the hottest part of the day (10:30 am to 3:30 pm).
3 WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES
Balance problems can also cause falls. When you walk, don't move or change positions quickly. Wear comfortable shoes with low heels. Avoid high heels and floppy slippers because it will make you slip and fall.
4 USE YOUR ASSISTIVE DEVICES
Ask your physical therapist about using a cane or walker if you have a problem with your balance. Attach a small basket to your walker to keep your phone and other important items in it.
5 Fix or remove trip hazards
Fixtures in a home can sometimes cause people to trip and fall, which can cause back pain and other injuries. Check every room and hallway for things like loose carpet, throw rugs that could be dangerous or wood floorboards that stick up. Then fix, remove, or replace those things to keep you from falling.
6Talk to your doctor about your medicine
If you take four or more different kinds of medicine, you should see your doctor at least once a year for a checkup. Some medications can make you dizzy, confused, or sleepy, affecting your coordination or balance and making you more likely to fall. Please bring along any other vitamins or supplements you may be taking, as they may interact with your medicine in ways you don't want. Before taking any medicine or supplement, you should always talk to your doctor first.
7 Light it right
Install brighter light bulbs where needed, especially on stairs and narrow hallways, to make it easier to get around your home. Putting night lights in bedrooms and bathrooms will make it easier to get around at night.
