Dr. Mikkel Jarman, a pediatric podiatrist in Gilbert, Arizona, remembers his grandpa taking him to a shoe store when he was twelve and picking him out a new pair of New Balance athletic shoes that would not have been his first choice. Not wanting to hurt his grandpa’s feelings, he wore those shoes, even to school with trepidation since once again, these would not have been the ones he would have picked out. To his surprise they became his favorite shoes and New Balance remains one of his favorite shoe brands even as an adult and professional podiatrist.

1. They need to have a firm sole that does not bend in half. It should only bend where the toes bend.
2. They must have a solid heel counter to hold it firmly and keeping it from rocking from side to side.
