Old Green House
Location: Jalan Burma, Georgetown, Penang
This coffee shop is famous for its Penang Hokkien Mee (Prawn Noodles) & Loh Mee.
Some trivia: The Hokkien language in Penang or generally the northern part is slightly different from the Hokkien language in the South where it sounded more like TeoChew (interchangeably). But often Hokkien & TeoChew dishes has some similarities.
As for Penang Hokkien Mee, it is known as Prawn Noodles in other states and the black sauce Udon-like noodles are called Hokkien Mee in other states except for Penang, while the Singapore's version of Hokkien Mee is different too.
1. Penang Hokkien Mee, Score: 7/10
The broth is sweet, savoury and slightly spicy which is a perfect combination for this dish. Served along with small prawns and half-boiled tea leaf egg. Very nice indeed. Though it could have been better with Kangkung and slices of meat as it is the usual ingredients of the dish.
2. Loh Mee, Score: 8/10
You can taste the spices in the thick, starchy gravy. Enhanced with pork lard, the flavour of this dish is heavenly. Much better than the supposed star dish, the Hokkien Mee.
3. Loh Bak, Score: 8/10
The Loh Bak stall here has a lot of choices, the variety of Ngo Hiang (5 Spice Meat), Taiwanese Sausages, Tofu, PiDan (Century Egg), beancurds and many more makes me wanna choose them all.
Environment typical of a Chinese coffee shop in Malaysia.
Order the food and take a seat. Service is fast, food is served 10 minutes. Hokkien Mee is self-service.
The price is affordable.
