The US mediator to the former Yugoslavia, Richard Holbrooke is
continuing his efforts to negotiate a ceasefire between the region's warring parties, but many obstacles remain. Meanwhile, the Bosnian Serb Leader Radovan Karadzic has called for the United States to bring the Moslem government in Sarajevo to the negotiating table.

US mediator Richard Holbrooke SOT .. "As we have said the distance
seperating the two sides is very large on all the major issues,
Sarajevo and Brcko and the Posavina corridor and Gorazde as well
as the details of the consititutional principals. Every time we
talk each side clarifies its views a little but while both sides
say they'd like to stop the fighting they haven't agreed on how
this would be done. I don't want to be optimistic and I don't want
to be pessimisitc.."

Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic SOT...: "The momentum is
critical now. The moslems would like to sabotage any peace
initiative and the whole world can now see why we didnt trust them
but we have to trust someone, we have to trust America and the
American ability to bring about peace and to bring the moslems to
the negotiating table. The constitutional principles set down in
New York are not as they expected them. There are still many
political fights ahead but we would rather have those kinds of
fights..."
