(12 Dec 2021) As most of Europe reintroduces measures to help curb the spread of the omicron variant, in Serbia the number of COVID-19 infections has been decreasing over the past few weeks.
This week hundreds of skiers hit the slopes of Kopaonik mountain, waiting in line at ski-lifts and enjoying outdoor cafes.
The official ski session started on December 9, with some virus control measures in place.
Head of Kopaonik ski resort Darko Jovanovic highlighted some of those measures including mandatory mask-wearing and reduced capacity on ski lifts.
"If someone doesn't respect the measures, wearing masks, keeping the distance, we have the right to remove them from the slope," Jovanovic said.
One of the skiers, who did not provide their name, said people are now used to mask wearing.
"It is going to be odd without them," she quipped.
Serbia saw a major surge during the fall but the situation has stabilized over the past few weeks to around 2,000 new cases daily.
Officials introduced partial COVID-19 passes in October to access bars, restaurants and cafes in the evenings.
