Does your arm feel tight and difficult to move after a stroke? Let us relax that stroke arm in this video.
After a stroke your arm may either be flaccid and lacking tone or spastic and tight. In this video we will try to loosen up a spastic and tight arm which usually happens a few days or weeks after a stroke.
We will massage areas that are tight to relax them in so that you will be getting some mobility on your arm.
We will be massaging from top to bottom. We will massage from the shoulder down to our fingers.
So first we will massage the shoulder that includes our trapz or trapezius muscle.
You might notice that your shoulder is like when you are trapezius muscle is always contracted. So who real massage that area using or knuckles or if you can’t reach just use your fingers start from the side of the neck in the back of your neck going towards your shoulder. Avoid bony prominences that will be irritating. Do about 10 to 15 slow passes.
The next area that we need to massage will be our chest. Start from the middle going to your armpit and under your collarbone. Do about 10 to 15 slow passes.
The next area is the top-front area of your arm or your anterior deltoid. Massage that area for about 10 to 15 passes.
When your elbow is bent and curled up, you biceps is usually tight. Gently massage that area for 10 to 15 slow passes. But if your arm is straight and rigid that way, then your triceps is the one that is part. Using your finger tips for your entire hand, massage the back part of your arm slowly stretch the elbow to the direction where it is difficult to move.
The next area to massage is your forearm. You can palpate or feel around your forearm and find areas that are very tight massage those areas for about 10-15 slow passes.
Your wrist is also most likely tight as well which curls up your hand and fingers. Massage that area across the grain for about 10 to 15 passes.
If you can access the palm of your hand, massage the fatty part of your thumb first and then inside your hand go slow because if you go fast come on there is a primitive reflex that will make that and close tighter.
Finally if you are able to open your hand, start with your thumb and gently massage it towards your finger tip or nails. Do the same with the rest of the fingers. If you cannot open your head because it is still very tight, watch the video on how to open your hand by clicking on the link.
