How Britain paid rich slave owners
One of the greatest crimes to humanity is the transatlantic slave trade.
When Britain realised its mistakes and after a lot of campaigns to end slavery, Britain passed the Slavery Abolition Act 1833.
The rich slave owners were important and powerful people in British society. They were not going to easily let the slaves go for free. They asked for compensation because they regard their slaves as properties or commodities.
Properties are very important to the British people so they needed to be compensated and to compensate the rich slave owners the Slave Compensation Act 1837 was created.
The government had to borrow a lot of money and go into debt that would take about 180 years to pay off.
here is the tweet from tweet by HM Treasury in 2015
: “Here’s today’s surprising #FridayFact. Millions of you have helped end the slave trade through your taxes. Did you know? In 1833, Britain used £20 million, 40% of its national budget, to buy freedom for all slaves in the Empire. The amount of money borrowed for the Slavery Abolition Act was so large that it wasn’t paid off until 2015. Which means that living British citizens helped pay to end the slave trade.”
The most annoying thing is that the slaves did not get any money. Only the rich slave owners got compensated.
