Prenatal genetic screening can provide insight into the presence of possible fetal chromosomal abnormalities. These abnormalities signal that a baby might be at risk for aneuploidies such as Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), Edwards syndrome (Trisomy 18) and Patau syndrome (Trisomy 13). Prenatal genetic screening doesn’t provide an exact diagnosis, but it allows parents to make informed decisions about their pregnancy. Kestutis Micke, a genetic counselor with the Colorado Fetal Care Center at Children’s Hospital Colorado, provides an overview of prenatal genetic screening. He highlights new, non-invasive procedures that are improving accuracy and reducing the impact on patients.
