My Happiness (Bergantine-Peterson) by Ella Fitzgerald with The Song Spinners
A 1948 ‘recording ban’ hit, performed a cappella (no musical instruments).* Though trailing the Pied Pipers and Jon and Sondra Steele versions (also posted), this all-vocal record by Ella and The Song Spinners reached top-10 on the sales, jukebox and airplay charts. Ten years later another girl singer--named Connie--would return “My Happiness” to the upper reaches of the best-sellers.
* During the nearly year-long strike by James C. Petrillo’s American Federation of Musicians, new vocal recordings for commercial release could be produced only as a cappella (all vocal...no instruments) or using such lesser, ‘union-approved’ tools as harmonicas, ukuleles and toy xylophones.
