Story: It started with the thunderstorm.
Everyone had been inside their houses, except for Todd. Todd was the manager of the mines. The only time people saw him was if they had a question about work. Nobody knew him very well, because he never came out of the mines. Todd was strolling through the mineshaft during the thunderstorm to see if everything was alright. He had been hearing a lot of rain, and the mine had a problem where it occasionally flooded on rainy nights, and strangely, there was no water as far as he could see. It was one of the heaviest rainstorms he'd ever heard, and he didn't see a single puddle. It was extraordinarily odd. He did hear something, though. It was coming from the walls, which was strange. The spot in the walls the sound was coming from hadn't been dug out yet. He knew there was something back there though. Being safe, he decided he would leave it alone and he would worry about it in the morning. Probably just another hole in the mine where water was getting in.
He was wrong.
There had been a crash. A bolt of lightning struck the mine. The beams shook, but there was something else. Something more than the lightning. Something was inside the mine, Todd was not alone. Whatever it was, it was trapped, but wouldn't be for long. Another crash of lightning- which also shook the mine. This lightning was hitting the mineshaft directly, Todd could feel it. The noises got louder; they weren't from any animal he'd ever heard- but they weren't human, either. The noises were calling in a harsh, whispery tone. It hurt his ears, and it kept getting louder. Finally, a third strike. This one destroyed the mine. He heard a huge blow, and dust was everywhere. Beams snapped. There were rocks falling everywhere, and the walls were literally vibrating. Something was about to escape, and it wasn't going to be pleasant. Todd ran, faster than he ever had.
Whatever it was escaped, and Todd wasn't going to look back. The sounds the things made were terrible, Todd had to cover his ears, he felt he was about to go insane because of the sound. Dust flew everywhere, and Todd couldn't see. Then, out of nowhere, Todd appeared at a mineshaft. It was Shaft 49. Rocks immediately covered the entrance after he got in. Shaft 49 was one of the abandoned shafts, after a cave-in accident. He could still hear the ear-piercing noise, it was louder than ever. He covered his ears and started running again, the noise seemed to be right next to him. It wouldn't stop, and his body slowly began to lose all feeling. It was as if something was possessing him, and then Todd realized he couldn't stop running. He tried, and he wasn't able to control his legs. After looking down at his legs, he looked up. He was running towards the pit. The pit was a hole the miners had excavated, they had worked along the walls- until the cave-in. The cave in crushed all the wooden beams supporting the miners, and 634 miners were killed in the incident. Todd was running straight for it.
Todd was never seen again.
... Alive, that is.
It was condemned after what had happened, which wasn't really known... Other than it was better to stay out of the mine. The screams were heard all over town, they went on all night. After the storm was gone, they stopped, but the town was still scared out of their minds. Everyone knew that there was no way a human could scream that loud, it had been heard over a mile away. Now every time a thunderstorm comes, the shrieks echo throughout the valley. And finally, someone's going to find out what's making that noise... And is also going to put an end to it. That's where you come in.
