There are 2 rectus muscles that run vertically from your rib cage into the groin. They play an important role in your core strength. Abdominal separation or diastasis recti occurs when these muscles in your abdomen are separated from each other.
They normally separate as a result of pregnancy or weight gain. The good news is that it can be fixed! And, the best way to fix this is with tummy tuck surgery.
Abdominal muscle separation is caused by increased internal abdominal pressure. As your baby grows during pregnancy, the pressure on your abdominal wall increases and the sides of your rectus abdominis or ‘six-pack’ muscles begin to widen. This widening occurs in the connective tissue between your abdominal muscles and causes a gap or separation to occur.
